YOU CANNOT LEARN TO PIERCE SIMPLY BY READING A BOOK. There is so much to know, like bloodborne pathogen certifications, anatomy, cross-contamination, sterilization, etc. If you want to learn to be a piercer, you must apprentice under a knowledgeable, experienced professional.
If you would like to read up and learn more about piercing for your own knowledge, http://www.bmezine.com is an amazing and never-ending resource for modified minds. You can also join the forums at http://www.lifemodified.com to talk to many many people who are heavily modified (pierced/tattooed/scarred/branded/etc) as well as piercing professionals, and a great book to read is The Piercing Bible by Elayne Angel.

No, you definitely can’t learn to pierce simply by reading a book or watching a video. Here is a brief passage from my book, The Piercing Bible, from the chapter about apprenticeships:

“An apprenticeship is an extended training period in a studio under a qualified mentor. In an ideal situation, an apprentice spends several months learning about body jewelry and acquiring counter-help skills. This interval allows the piercer to assess the apprentice’s capabilities, trustworthiness, and work ethic. Later, the apprentice observes piercings, and eventually performs them under close supervision. In the best case the instructor will be a truly accomplished expert, and she will teach the apprentice everything she knows. One year of full-time training under a mentor is a reasonable minimum for most apprentices. Apprentices are frequently paid as employees, although they commonly receive a rather low hourly rate or salary. Most ethical piercers will
not take you on as an apprentice unless they intend to keep you on staff. There is little point in devoting intensive time and energy to training you if you will leave to set up a competing studio or have to seek a job in a glutted market.”

There’s tons of useful information for you in my book, and it will help you to evaluate yourself, so you will know if a career in piercing is really right for you.
